Rahman's Unity of Light concert on Friday night was not just about the seven colours that make up light coming together - it was also about very different people from various walks of life rubbing shoulders and spending one evening together, listening to music that managed to transcend more than just language barriers. It was the coming together of India's finest performers - Sivamani, SPB, Janaki, Hariharan, Shankar Mahadevan, Sukhwindra Singh, Srinivas, Sadhna Sargam, Mahalakshmi, Anupama, Vasundara Das and Karthik among others. Live and at home for the first time, A.R. Rahman got a rousing reception when he appeared on stage in a shower of golden sparks. The Unity of Light's team had clearly thrown their heart and soul into the project, because the evening went off almost flawlessly ('almost' because sound failed yet again, for a cumulative total of only about 4 minutes during the four-hour-long show). The stage was stunning, with elaborate lights in all the colours of - well - light. And the crowds stretched out right from the front of the stage to the end of the India Pistons Grounds, some sitting, some standing - and practically all singing.
